Honeymoon Bay

St. John Beaches: Honeymoon Beach
Honeymoon Beach

Honeymoon Beach, St. John US Virgin IslandsNaming Honeymoon Bay

Historically and on most Virgin Islands maps, Salomon Bay, often misspelled, “Solomon,” contains two beaches, not individually named. Locals, however distinguish between the two, with the western one called Salomon and the eastern one, Honeymoon.

It was in fact Jumbie Bay that first received the nickname Honeymoon because of its somewhat hidden location and its reputation as being the beach for secret trysts. Later on with the development of the resort at Caneel Bay, the hotel co-opted the name, for the eastern beach on Salomon Bay and it stuck.

Sun Dog Cafe’s “Wednesday Night Jam” is Now the “Sunday Night Jam”

After seven years and over 3,000 individual performances seen by an estimated 20,000 people, the Wednesday Night Jam is taking it’s act down the road to Sunday Night, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Over the seven year existence of the event, the overflowing stage has welcomed Jonathan Edwards (“Sunshine”, “Shanty”), Fly Amero of Orleans (“Dance with Me”), and other notable musical guests, along with a steady local offering of talent. In contrast to a band or having an open mike, the now Sunday Night Jam is unique in that it encourages musicians who didn’t even know each other to join each other on stage. The results are often magical, occasionally erratic, but always entertaining. It was originated by Mark Wallace, and sustained by Lauren Magnie Jones, and has grown to a point where we literally have stopped traffic, so we are moving it in order to provide more space for the event. We can’t ever thank all of the supporters of the event, in its early, quieter days, the musicians who shared a wealth of talent and our guests who recognized the unique personal connection that was shared on more than one occasion.

We’re preparing a special menu for the event that we are putting together now. We hope you can join us this, and every Sunday for the Sunday Night Jam!

Beaches Get a Little Help from the Friends
By Lynda Lohr — March 20, 2013

A Friends of V.I. National Park program to help St. John’s beleaguered beaches begun last year at Maho Bay Beach is branching out this year to include Cinnamon Bay, Francis Bay, Trunk Bay, and Hawksnest Bay beaches.

These popular north shore beaches have suffered from erosion, people and deer. “Deer have become a major problem,” according to Gary Ray, a St. John-based restoration ecologist who owns Virgin Forest Restorations….

St. John Springtime – Soon Come

Vanda Orchid St. John US Virgin islands
St. John Springtime: Vanda Orchid

We’re slowly seeing the signs of spring here on St. John. Albeit not as dramatic as springtime in America, we do, contrary to what many believe, have definite seasons. Today, for example marks the day that America goes back on Daylight Time, making Eastern Standard Time (EST) equal to our Atlantic Standard Time (AST). The seawater has become warm enough not to be so shocking (for  baby like me anyway, but not warm enough for a baby like my friend Mario). More scientifically demonstrating the coming of a new season is the appearance of flowers on my mango tree and the aloes in bloom a buzz with bees and hummingbirds in the morning.

We Must Be Doing Something Right

St. John Does Something Right

There’s no gas on Vieques. They ran out the day before yesterday and word is that a shipment might arrive today. When word gets here that the gasoline has left Puerto Rico on the barge, the gas lines will form.

Asking friends on the island about this, I would hear, “well you know how it is living on an island. We only have two gas stations and all our gas has to come in by barge from Puerto Rico”

But no, I don’t know. We pretty much always have gas on St. John. We only have one gas station and not only does our gas have to come by barge from St. Thomas, St. Thomas needs to get gas from somewhere.

I imagine it’s a matter of efficiency, and contrary to popular opinion, we must be fairly efficient here on St. John, at least when it comes to gasoline availability.
