St. John USVI Wildlife: Iguana Burrowing

Iguana burrowing in rocky soil – Chocolate Hole, St. John, Virgin Islands

On April 15, I wrote a blog in which I presented a photo of an iguana burrow, which I found in the sand by the boat ramps in Great Cruz Bay. At the time, I didn’t actually see the iguana making the hole.

Yesterday, however, I did catch an iguana in the act of burrowing and captured some of the project on video. This time it was in back of my house in Chocolate Hole, a more difficult endeavor for the iguana due to the rocky nature of the land. At one point it actually looked like the iguana was thinking about moving the big rock that was in its way.

Drop in cruise ship calls to St. Thomas could cost business community millions

ST. THOMAS – Fewer cruise ships could mean fewer dollars in the bank for local businesses in the coming tourism season.

Though the V.I. Port Authority has yet to release the number of cruise ship calls expected during the 2014-2015 cruise ship season, the West Indian Co. reported last week that they are expecting a three-percent drop in the number of ships visiting its dock….

St. John Morning: An Incident at the Gym

Yesterday the ceiling fell down at the gym.

It wasn’t the whole ceiling, just one two-foot square acoustic ceiling tile. It fell down right above the bench press machine. It was caused by a build up of water from a leaking air-conditioner drain. A lady was using the shoulder press machine nearby, but nothing fell on her.

Looking at the debris on the floor, I remarked to the gym attendants, “I’m glad it didn’t fall on me while I was using the machine. It would have shocked the hell out of me.”

St. John fauna: iguana“That’s nothing,” she replied. “It’s happened before,” and then she told me the circumstances of the previous incident.

It seems that just moments after the ceiling tile came down, a big iguana dropped to the floor.

The attendant screamed. The iguana bolted. Someone opened the front door and the iguana rushed out onto the courtyard.

I guess that was even more shocking!

The work on the beautification and renovation of the Franklin Powell Parkin Cruz Bay was completed sometime last month, well in time for the next tourist season and before the interruption of any potential tropical disturbances during the Atlantic Hurricane Season, but not in time for the St. John Festival .
