Cathrineberg Horsemill today

The horsemill located just across the road from the restored Cathrineberg windmill had been converted to a cistern that used to serve as a fresh water pond containing attractive aquatic plants, until it was allowed to crumble and decay. When the flowers were in bloom, it was a sight to behold!

Delta Increases Flights from N.Y., Atlanta
By Source Staff — November 13, 2013

The U.S. Virgin Islands will start benefiting next month from more flights out of the New York and Atlanta gateways.

Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty previously announced the debut of daily flights from JFK International Airport to Cyril E. King International Airport on St. Thomas. The flights will run from Dec. 15 to March 30, 2014.

Nicholson-Doty said Delta will return in the summer to continue the daily New York service from July 1 to Sept. 2, 2014.

This winter Delta will also serve St. Thomas with twice daily flights from Atlanta’s Hartfield Jackson International Airport, and add a third Saturday service, representing a total of 15 flights per week from the Atlanta market.

“Delta Air Lines recognizes the strength and appeal of our destination and we are grateful for that,” Nicholson-Doty said.

She estimated the carrier will bring more than 10,000 new seats on more than 50 additional flights to St. Thomas over the winter period.

The commissioner explained that the department’s airline development policy has resulted in noted growth in air capacity to St. Thomas. She said efforts continue in earnest to enhance additional lift to St. Croix.

Herman Farm Workshop

Estate Herman Farm St. John USVI
Storage Shed and Workshop Used by Cory Bishop at Estate Catherineberg in the 1940s

In the 1940s, an American, Cory Bishop, operated a working truck farm on Estate Cathrineberg, known then as Herman Farm similar to the American truck farms of that day. He produced vegetables, fruits and livestock. All that’s left of his operation is the horsemill, across the road from the windmill that had been converted to a cistern, which used to serve as a fresh water pond containing attractive aquatic plants, until it was allowed to crumble and decay and an old workshop and storage shed which can be found (with perseverance) in the bush off the east end of the Catherineberg Road.

St. John Virgin Islands: Catherineberg “Pano”

Cathrineberg Windmill

One of my friends visiting me on St. John last week, Jonah Gouin, is into, among many other cool things, “panos.”

Panos, short for panoramas, are a series of still photos stitched together seamlessly to form a three dimensional interactive image that can be manipulated by the viewer using the mouse and a few easy to use commands. It’s as if one was standing in a spot and can see in any direction, up, down and around as well as being able to zoom in on any particular view.

To show me how it was done, we picked the Catherineberg windmill as a test and Jonah shot the pano. It’s not new technology, but it’s very cool and really lends itself to St. John with it’s dramatic overlooks and fascinating ruins.

Check this one out for yourself – Cathrineberg Panorama

(The red dots will take you between the lower passageway level and the upper windmill level. The last button to the right puts the pano into full screen mode.)
