St. John Springtime: Vanda Orchid

We’re slowly seeing the signs of spring here on St. John. Albeit not as dramatic as springtime in America, we do, contrary to what many believe, have definite seasons. Today, for example marks the day that America goes back on Daylight Time, making Eastern Standard Time (EST) equal to our Atlantic Standard Time (AST). The seawater has become warm enough not to be so shocking (for  baby like me anyway, but not warm enough for a baby like my friend Mario). More scientifically demonstrating the coming of a new season is the appearance of flowers on my mango tree and the aloes in bloom a buzz with bees and hummingbirds in the morning.

Virgin Islands government offers a five percent discount on property tax if paid by March 15

The Lieutenant Governor’s Office, which is where you pay your property tax, was busy yesterday. The government’s offer of a 5% discount to those paying up before March 15, seems to be working. If you’re paying at the office, which is probably a good idea (save your receipts), you can count on a wait unless you’re really lucky. Also, despite what it says on the door, the new hours are 9:00 to 4:00 not 9:00 to 5:00.

Great Cruz Bay, St. John US Virgin IslandsSt. John Weather

Manta Ray, Maho Bay St. John US Virgin islands (USVI)

Manta Ray at Maho Bay

Another beautiful Day at Maho Bay. The water seems to be warming up a bit and as usual there was plenty to see both from the shore and from the water. The manta rays are the newest tourists to find Maho (and Maho Campground and Little Maho and Francis Bays) to be an excellent venue for a day at the beach and have been hanging around for the last few months to the delight of all.

St. John Film Society Presents

A “NOT TO BE MISSED EVENT!”
“Proceed and Be Bold!”
Tuesday, March 6, 2012
7:30 pm at St John School of the Arts
Directed by Laura Zinger
90 minutes, 2008, Documentary

Proceed and Be Bold
Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. is an internationally recognized printing press artist known for his socially and politically charged works of art. At age 40 and unsatisfied with his comfortable, middle-class life, Amos traded in his computer for a printing press and his white collar for a pair of overalls. Armed with life, liberty, peanuts and a meager yearly income of $7,000, Amos cranked out a new, rebellious declaration of independence.

The film joins Amos in a fascinating account of his story, while examining the pretensions and provisions of the art world. The work of this self-proclaimed “Humble Negro Printer” raises emotionally-charged questions and reveals remarkable depth beneath the bold print. By learning the rules and then choosing to break them, Amos redefines what life (and letterpress printing) can be: exhilarating and revolutionary.

JOIN DIRECTOR LAURA ZINGER AND AMOS PAUL KENNEDY JR. FOR DISCUSSION AFTER THE SCREENING!

Laura Zinger is the founder and owner of Chicago-based, creative content production company 20K Films. Her 2008 initiative, Proceed and Be Bold has been screened in countries around the world. Zinger has worked for various film companies, including MGM, Pretty Pictures and MOJO, a post-production trailer house. In addition to 20K Films, Zinger works as the Web Video Producer for Milk For Thought, a new national website dedicated to connecting, empowering and supporting breastfeeding mothers.

Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. is a journeyman letterpress printer living in rural Alabama, and the thought provoking subject of the film Proceed and Be Bold! He will be present at the screening and will have his posters available for sale!

Manta rays delight beach-goers at Francis and Maho Bays

francis bay mantaray

Manta Ray at Francis Bay

Presidents Day weekend and the beaches of St. John are the place to be; sunbathers, swimmers, snorkelers, paddle boarders, picnickers and little kids playing. On Francis, Little Maho and Maho Bays, people are talking about the big manta. There are two of them, some say three and there big and beautiful and docile. (Manta rays have a short tail and no stinging spine.)

Manta Ray St. John Virgin IslandsThe mantas swim gracefully right under snorkelers and paddle boards, looking as if they were flying through the water with enormous wings. They even put on a show for those watching from the shore, occasionally breaching the surface and flipping over like playful children.

Whale-watching tours return

By ALDETH LEWIN (Daily News Staff) ST. THOMAS – The Environmental Association of St. Thomas-St. John (EAST) once again is hosting a series of whale watches to learn about the enormous mammals and hopefully see some, too.

Last year, about 30 people were treated to a spectacular show as three humpback whales frolicked around the boat for almost 45 minutes. While a whale sighting is never guaranteed, the trips can be fun and educational.

Each year, the nonprofit organization hosts whale watches in February and March. This year the dates are Feb. 26, March 4 and March 11. … Read More
