Want to stay updated to Life on St. John - subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! Virgin Islands government offers a five percent discount on property tax if paid by March 15
The Lieutenant Governor’s Office, which is where you pay your property tax, was busy yesterday. The government’s offer of a 5% discount to those paying up before March 15, seems to be working. If you’re paying at the office, which is probably a good idea (save your receipts), you can count on a wait unless you’re really lucky. Also, despite what it says on the door, the new hours are 9:00 to 4:00 not 9:00 to 5:00.
St. John Weather
We have a wind advisory, which will be in effect until 3;00 Thursday and a high surf advisory in effect from 8:00 am this morning until 8:00 am tomorrow morning.
High temperature is forecast to be in the low 80s. we should also see some rain squalls passing through from time to time, especially during the morning. Winds are from the NNE at 10 – 15 mph (Surf’s up!) Water temperature is 80 degrees and sunset will be at 6:27 pm. The moon will rise at 6:00 pm and will be 99% full.

St. John Does Something Right
There’s no gas on Vieques. They ran out the day before yesterday and word is that a shipment might arrive today. When word gets here that the gasoline has left Puerto Rico on the barge, the gas lines will form.
Asking friends on the island about this, I would hear, “well you know how it is living on an island. We only have two gas stations and all our gas has to come in by barge from Puerto Rico”
But no, I don’t know. We pretty much always have gas on St. John. We only have one gas station and not only does our gas have to come by barge from St. Thomas, St. Thomas needs to get gas from somewhere.
I imagine it’s a matter of efficiency, and contrary to popular opinion, we must be fairly efficient here on St. John, at least when it comes to gasoline availability.

St. John Photo of the Day
 Trunk Bay
This is undoubtedly the most photographed scene in all St. John. It’s a magnificent vista and is always beautiful no matter what the conditions. On Monday afternoon, however, the conditions were just about perfect, clear skies and white fluffy clouds.

Two Earthquakes Last Night
Last night we experienced two moderately strong earthquakes. I was awake for the first, a 5.3 at 12.28 am and slept through the second, a 5.1 at 4.28 am.
It was a pretty good shake that only lasted a few seconds. I thought about going outside, but it was over before I made my move. A Facebook friend wrote this: “…The cat climbed onto my chest and then the shaking started and when a pan fell over in the kitchen it scared us both pretty good…”

Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers
by Rick Goldsmith and Judith Ehrlich (92 min) 2009
Nominated for a 2010 Academy Award as Best Documentary Feature
Daniel Ellsberg narrates his own true story in “The Most Dangerous Man in America”. In 1971 he was a leading Pentagon Vietnam War strategist who concluded the war was based on decades of lies. He leaked 7,000 pages of top-secret documents to The New York Times, a daring act of conscience that lead directly to Watergate, President Nixon’s resignation and the end of the Vietnam War.

HEART OF THE SEA
by Lisa Denker, Charlotte Lagarde (57 min) 2002
HEART OF THE SEA is a portrait of Rell “Kapolioka’ ehukai” Sunn, who died in January 1998 of breast cancer at the age of 47. Known worldwide as a pioneer of women’s professional surfing, at home in Hawaii Rell achieved the stature of an icon – not only for her physical power, grace and luminous beauty, but for her leadership in a community that loved her as much as she loved it.
By the time she lost a 15 year battle with breast cancer, Rell’s legacy had grown far beyond athletic feats. HEART OF THE SEA tells her larger-than-life story.
Remember to bring your own chair & call Juliette at Sputniks (775-7373) if you would like to order one of her delicious roti.
