Today is Transfer Day in the United States Virgin Islands celebrating the purchase of the Danish West Indies from Denmark by the United States of America.

This concept of one nation located on the European mainland selling a group of inhabited islands located in the Caribbean to another nation located on the North American mainland is hard for me to grasp. What exactly was Denmark selling and the US buying? The land? The people?
