St. John Crafts: Mario Benjamin’s Fry Nets
Posted by gerald in Life on St. John USVI, tags: Mario Benjamin, St. JohnFry nets are used to catch the Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia, more commonly known as fry, which are used for bait.
St. Johnian craftsman, Mario Benjamin, has been weaving these nets for 18 years. It takes him about four months to complete one.
These are the most beautiful fry nets I’ve ever seen. One of them is even displayed in the Smithsonian Institution.

You’re right, they are beautiful! I would even use one to decorate a room!
His niece though it would make a nice dress (minus the lead weights, that is)
Gerald, I forgot to ask…is Mario related to the late Mr. Guy Benjamin?
I used to talk on the phone with Mr.B every other month and visit with him whenever I was on Island. I miss him dearly. Need to find out where he is buried so I can take some flowers to him when I am visiting in May.
Thank you,Gerald, for all your informative and fun posts.
