There is one living behind my catamaran for 3 months. Every time I snorkel around it is there. I was a little bit freaked out at the beginning but it is quite quiet, let me clean the hulls or check the mooring keeping some distance. I could make a few submarine pics but of bad quality. We are in the north of Dominican Republic. I don't tell people about it, otherwise someone will come and kill it.

All true. A bump to not buying an inexpensive PVC mask. They are truly inferior. Folks sometimes show up on our snorkeling trips with these and they almost always leak. Great info I will refer people here, thanks Gerald.

This tragic drowning reminds me of a night anchored in Maho Bay. Samantha and I had my cousin her husband and two children onboard. We were settled in for the night and were just doing dishes when we saw a man standing on our swim platform! He was intoxicated and saying he couldn't find his girlfriend.
We were concerned for her but also not sure about this stranger who had boarded our boat unanounced at night. I suggested we take the dingy and go look for her. He seemed oddly unimpressed with this idea. Finally we got him off the boat and into the dingy. We looked around, called her name and tried to get details. The man was very unclear on what had happened. We tried to leave him on the beach and offered to radio and call for help when we returned to our boat. He begged to come with us to help with the radio call. We obliged but when we got back on board he started asking questions about the boat, what year it was, saying it was "really nice" it just seemed odd in the heat of the supposed emergency. We finally got St John rescue and we took him back to the beach to meet the flashing lights coming down the hill. We were never sure if he was a pirate casing our boat or in need of real help. Thankfully no one drowned in Maho Bay that night but we moved to a mooring farther off shore just to be sure we didn't get anymore mysterious visitors.
