Barges (Car Ferry)

St John Transportation Barge (Car Ferry) Red Hook, St. Thomas - Cruz Bay St. John

About the Barges

There are two independent barge companies with service between Cruz Bay, St. John and Red Hook, St. Thomas,:

Love City Car Ferries and Boyson, Inc.

Barge fees are for vehicles only – passengers ride free. It’s a good idea to arrive about a half hour earlier than the scheduled
departure to increase your chances of getting on your desired barge.

The Captain Vic, operated by the Love City Car Ferries Barge
Company is named after the late Captain Victor Sewer, a well-respected, prominent St. Johnian, renowned as a man of the sea. The CEO is his grandson, Lewelen “Little Lew” Sewer. Little Lew’s father, Big Lew, was, among other things, the disk jockey that coined the name for St. John, “Love City.”

The General is operated by the Boynes, family company Boyson
Inc. A plaque honoring Loredon Boynes is displayed prominently at the Cruz Bay Dock.

General Information

General Information

St. John’s beauty is found all over the island: on the beaches and in the reefs, forests and ruins. Hiking during the day is popular, and some great places can be found within walking distance. Another way to try to explore the island and its neighbors is by motored transportation, with a taxi, ferry or barge.

Taxi service is easy to find on St. John. Taxis can be called to pick you up if you need. Taxis charge per person and per destination, there are no metered taxis.

The Vitran Bus System services various areas of the island. Vitran buses run along Centerline Road, about once an hour. The fare is $1 a person, and Senior Citizens can get a discounted fare of $0.55. The Vitran Bus system is not very reliable, so if you’re on a schedule, it’s not a good idea to rely on the bus.

Inter-island travel is facilitated by ferry service between St. Thomas and St. John and commuter airlines on St. Thomas.
