There are three barge independent barge companies with service between
Cruz Bay, St. John and Red Hook, St. Thomas, Global Marine, Republic
and Boyson, Inc.
About the Barges
Barge fees are for vehicles only – passengers ride free. It’s
a good idea to arrive about a half hour earlier than the scheduled
departure to increase your chances of getting on your desired barge.
Roanoke, operated by Global
Marine, is distinguished by the big potted palm trees on deck.
Stanley “Bubbla” Hedrington is the CEO of Global
Marine is a native St. Johnian.
The Captain Vic, operated by the Love City Car Ferries Barge
Company is named after the late Captain Victor Sewer, a well-respected,
prominent St. Johnian, renowned as a man of the sea. The CEO
is his grandson, Lewelen “Little Lew” Sewer. Little Lew’s father, Big
Lew, was, among other things, the disk jockey that coined the name
for St. John, “Love City.”
The General is operated by the Boynes, family company Boyson
Inc. A plaque honoring Loredon Boynes is displayed prominently at the Cruz Bay Dock.
